Audi to launch on-demand car service in UK later in 2017

TV shows, movies, music – these days, everything is available on demand, there at the click of a smartphone app, whenever we want it.
Luxury carmaker Audi has taken the concept to a new level by launching the UK’s first on-demand car hire service out of its Oldham dealership starting in autumn 2017.
The service has already been trialled across the pond in San Francisco, with the full range of vehicles on offer, from the A3 at $130 per day to the Lamborghini Gallardo-based R8 sports car at $1,200 per day.
At the click of an app
Once registered on the online system, customers can view the range of vehicles available, including a full tour of the cars inside and out, via a smartphone app. They can then choose the car they want and either have it delivered to their home or collect it from their local dealership.
Conceptually, this is not the first idea of its kind, and other car companies offer car share systems that bear some similarities. However, where most only provide a “get what’s available” network of basic vehicles at the lowest trim levels, Audi is the first to provide this bespoke level of service.
Global roll out
Senior management at Audi have hailed the San Francisco trial a success and the UK launch is part of a broader roll out across the globe, at locations in Europe and as far afield as Australia.
Andrew Doyle is Managing Director of Audi UK, and he acknowledged that this project represented something of a leap into the unknown for the German car giant. “We are not car rental experts but we’ll give it a try,” he said. “The indications are that such a scheme can work.”
